#FIGHTINGCANCERWITHHOPE

OUR HISTORY & FUTURE

Biviana “Bivi” Franco is the Founder and CEO of Feel Beautiful Today (FBT), an organization that delivers love, hope, and encouragement to cancer patients and survivors through innovative Arts in Health programs. The intention is to improve and transform healthcare settings using various creative programs at no cost to the patients or medical facility. Patient care and Quality of Life (QoL) is of the utmost importance to cancer centers and hospitals.

Each program FBT develops is designed for the patient in crisis to boost their overall well-being. The program activities complement the medical staff’s effort to foster a positive healing environment for patients undergoing treatment. FBT supports the mind/body connection by utilizing Arts in Health to lower stress and reduce fear and anxiety.

Members of Bivi’s family, including her mother, two aunts, cousin, and two of her close friends were all confronted with cancer diagnoses. In 2010, this motivated Bivi to use her skills as an artist and art instructor to start FBT. She also used her experience as Artist in Residence with Cobb County Schools where she created the “On the Go Studio,” which was rolled out to hundreds of school-age children in North Atlanta.

Bivi felt compelled to use her background to help cancer patients use the arts to give them a creative and positive experience during treatment and recovery. Her passion and commitment to this mission leads Bivi to study more about Arts in Health in clinical settings, and she has earned certifications from the University of Florida and the University of Tasmania. FBT, founded in 2010, has now served more than 9,000 patients and survivors and works with 13 cancer centers and hospitals in the metro Atlanta area. Her work has earned several awards and recognitions in the community.

"I believe there is a God. I believe there is a heaven. I believe that we have a purpose on this earth. I just want to be able to serve in this world and make a difference with the talents that God has given me."

Art changes the way the brain and the body experience the world and how the patient views his or herself and the perspective on illness.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ARTS IN HEALTH

One of the challenges of battling cancer is that, despite the existence of familial and non-familial support groups, there is a tendency for cancer patients to feel isolated. For caregivers, it is likewise challenging. There are often no words or touch that adequately console or express the depth of one’s compassion. Art is important because it provides a medium which transcends language.

Arts in Healthcare is “a diverse, multidisciplinary field dedicated to transforming the healthcare experience by connecting people with the power of the arts at key moments in their lives."

While participating in creative activities such as painting, writing, and jewelry-making, patients experience the phenomenon of flow. It is this experience of flow that physiologically changes the way the brain and the body experience the world and how the patient views his or herself and the perspective illness. We allow a space for the patients, and family members to engage both their mind and their emotions in a safe environment.
At Feel Beautiful Today we strive to create an environment where true healing can occur, where cancer patients can express their pain and grief through the act of creating art. Somehow, there is a camaraderie experienced when patients begin to understand that they are not alone in their fight.

Every day we see the power of a communal experience including art. Patients entering a workshop are transformed through the activities and relationships they encounter. It is Feel Beautiful Today’s desire to provide every resource we can to help patients live a better life, and we believe art is a key component in the healing process.
Patients who participate in our programs get lost in the activities we provide. We personally see the satisfaction on each face of patients who have just completed what may have once seemed like an impossible task. We are honored that for just a moment, we can provide a time and space for everything else to fall away and a special moment of peace and calm to be experienced.

Feel Beautiful Today has the privilege of partnering with hospitals and cancer centers to help provide patient-centered care through Arts in Health programs.
